Background In 2017, the “letterzetter” bark beetle caused an enormous havoc in our Belgian forests. This beetle killed and damaged a lot of pine trees.
Three years later, many of these trees are still standing, waiting for a storm to blow them down. For several generations, my family owned a small piece of land with a small but charming forest hut. This particular piece of land was also hit by the “letterzetter”.
To prevent the forest house from being damaged, we decided to remove the damaged pines. When the woodpile was starting to grow I realized that it would be a waste to throw all the wood on a campfire. So from there I started the search for alternative ways to use the wood.

For this project I chose to work with solid logs and processed them with minimal intervention.
In this way, I retrieved a contrast between heavy organic logs and light geometrical beams.

The bench is completely constructed from wood, without the use of nails or glue.
The beams are clamped and held in place by the chiseled grooves in the log. This means that the bench can always be taken apart for storage or moving.
